Quick answer

Living in the UAE changes the India question. The flight is short, many residents have family or colleagues who've been treated there, and UAE hospitals charge a lot more for the same operation. This guide sets India's published 2026 hip replacement prices in dirhams against UAE listings, and covers the things people in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah tend to ask: insurance, which visa applies to your passport, and whether a second trip for a check-up is realistic.
UAE prices against India, in dirhams
| Where | Published (USD) | ≈ AED | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| UAE hospitals, hip replacement range | $16,500–$26,000 | AED 60,600–95,480 | Bookimed UAE listing, updated 25 Sep 20263 |
| One Dubai hospital on the same listing | $16,500–$22,000 | AED 60,600–80,800 | Bookimed (Dubai London Hospital entry)3 |
| UAE figure quoted by an Indian hospital group | About $46,000 | ≈ AED 168,940 | Shalby compare-rates page (its own comparison)6 |
| India, total hip (marketplace) | $5,200–$8,500 | AED 19,100–31,220 | Bookimed India listing1 |
| India, total hip (facilitator) | $5,800–$10,100 | AED 21,300–37,090 | Medical Tourism Co.2 |
| India, hospital starting price | From $5,500 | From AED 20,200 | Max Healthcare international page7 |
Converted at the fixed rate of AED 3.6725 per US dollar and rounded. Shalby is an Indian hospital group comparing itself with other countries, so treat its UAE figure as marketing. On Bookimed's own listings, India's range is roughly a third of the UAE's.
Check your UAE insurance before anything else
Many residents have employer health insurance, and that changes the maths. If your policy would pay for a hip in the UAE with a modest co-pay, travelling to India to pay cash may cost you more, not less. Ask your insurer three questions in writing: will they cover planned surgery abroad, will they cover follow-up and physiotherapy in the UAE after surgery done elsewhere, and what happens if you need treatment for a complication. Policies differ a lot, and we can't answer this for you.
What an Indian package covers
"Package" is a flexible word. The fullest published version we saw covers the operating team, implant, drugs, a clot-prevention pump, physio sessions, an interpreter, airport pick-up and drop-off, and up to five hotel nights.2 A hospital quote may cover only the operation and ward stay. Items that commonly move the price:
- Bearing surface: ceramic-on-ceramic adds about 30–50%, according to Bookimed.1
- Robotic assistance: about 20–25% extra on the same listing.1
- Both hips: Max Healthcare lists bilateral surgery from $8,000 (about AED 29,380).5
- Partial hip: $2,300–$5,300 (about AED 8,450–19,460) on one facilitator's table.2
- Revision: about $7,500–$8,500 (AED 27,540–31,220).1
The short flight is the real advantage
Dubai to Delhi takes about three to three and a half hours.4 That opens up a plan that's hard to do from London or Toronto:
- A short first visit (optional) to meet the surgeon, repeat any tests and agree the implant and quote face to face.
- The surgery trip, usually about two to three weeks, including a few days in hospital and physiotherapy afterwards.1, 2
- A check-up visit some weeks later, if your surgeon wants to see you in person, rather than relying on video calls and local X-rays.
Short doesn't mean risk-free. AAOS lists blood clots among the known risks after hip replacement and describes blood thinners, compression and early movement as standard prevention.8 Follow the surgeon's written instructions for the flight home, even if it's only three hours.
Recovery and follow-up in the UAE
According to AAOS, you'll need help at home for several weeks, falls are a real hazard, and dislocation risk is highest in the first few months. Serious complications such as infection affect fewer than 2% of patients.8 Before you leave, arrange:
- An orthopaedic surgeon in the UAE who agrees to see you after surgery abroad.
- Outpatient physiotherapy starting the week you return.
- A copy of the operation note, discharge summary, X-rays and implant details (brand, model, sizes), in English.
- Help at home, especially if you live alone or in a building with stairs.
Choosing where to go
Plenty of UAE residents get recommendations from friends. That's a fine starting point, but check the hospital against criteria, not reputation alone:
- JCI or NABH accreditation, confirmed on the accreditor's directory.9, 10
- The named surgeon's annual volume of hip replacements and revisions.
- Implant brand and model written into the quote before you travel.
- A written policy on extra nights and complications, and who pays.

Which visa? It depends on your passport
Residence in the UAE doesn't decide your visa; your nationality does. Indian citizens don't need one. If you hold an OCI card, it works as a multiple-entry lifelong visa for India.11 Most other passport holders, including UAE, British, American and Canadian nationals, can apply online for an e-Medical visa, with e-Medical Attendant visas for up to two companions.12 The e-Visa portal says visa on arrival is available to UAE nationals only if they've previously held an Indian e-Visa or regular visa.12

When staying in the UAE makes sense
If your insurance covers most of a UAE operation, if you need a complex revision, if you have heart or clotting problems, or if nobody can travel with you and help afterwards, a UAE hospital may be the better choice, even at a higher sticker price.
FAQ: hip replacement in India for UAE residents
How much is a hip replacement in India in dirhams?
Current listings put one total hip at about $5,200–$10,100, roughly AED 19,100–37,090. Max Healthcare starts at $5,500 (about AED 20,200) for one hip and $8,000 (about AED 29,380) for both. Flights and hotel nights after discharge are extra.
How does that compare with UAE hospitals?
Bookimed's UAE listing shows about $16,500–$26,000, roughly AED 60,600–95,480, for a hip replacement. India's published range is about a third of that, before travel and accommodation.
Will my UAE insurance pay for surgery in India?
It depends entirely on your policy. Ask your insurer in writing whether it covers planned treatment abroad, follow-up in the UAE, and complications. If it would pay for surgery at home, going abroad may not save money.
How long is the flight, and how long will I stay?
Dubai to Delhi takes about three to three and a half hours. Plan on two to three weeks in India for the surgery trip, and possibly a short return visit for a check-up.
Do UAE residents need a visa for medical treatment in India?
It depends on your passport. Indian citizens don't. OCI cardholders use their OCI card as a lifelong visa. Most other nationalities apply online for an e-Medical visa, and UAE nationals can get visa on arrival only if they've held an Indian visa before.
What should I bring back for my UAE doctor?
The operation note, discharge summary, X-rays and a written record of the implant brand, model and sizes, all in English.
