Most people in the UK who look at India for a new hip fall into one of two groups: they've been told the NHS wait is months long and the pain won't wait, or they've priced a private hip at home and choked on the number. This page is for both. It puts India's published 2026 figures in pounds, next to real UK private prices and current NHS waiting data, and it's honest about the parts of going abroad that cost more than money.

The NHS option first

A hip replacement on the NHS is free at the point of use.4 The catch is time. PlainNHS, which summarises the official referral-to-treatment figures for June 2026, puts the median wait in trauma and orthopaedics at a little over 13–14 weeks, but one in ten people waits more than about 39–40 weeks. Only 60.6% of people on the orthopaedic list had been waiting less than 18 weeks, and more than 837,000 orthopaedic pathways were open.4 Your own trust may be better or worse, so ask your GP or the hospital for your expected date before you spend anything.

You can also ask about choosing a different NHS provider. That isn't something we can price, but it's a free question to ask before you consider self-funding at all.

Self-funding in the UK: what a private hip costs

Practice Plus Group, which publishes fixed prices, lists a hip replacement at £13,199 plus a £145 consultation, so £13,344 in total, with a private wait of about 4–6 weeks. The same article puts the UK average private price at about £14,412 and the range at roughly £13,199–£22,249.3 Those prices usually bundle aftercare in the UK, which an Indian package can't.

Sterling at £0.76 per US dollar, the ECB reference rate for 24 September 2026, rounded.7 Your bank or card will use its own rate on the day you pay, and most Indian hospitals invoice international patients in dollars.

On paper India costs roughly a third to a little over half of a UK private hip. Then add return flights for you and a companion, two to three weeks of accommodation, meals, taxis, travel insurance that actually covers surgery, and time off work. For many people the saving shrinks to a few thousand pounds. For some it disappears.

What the India quote should spell out

The most generous published package we found bundles fees, implant, medicines, a clot-prevention pump, physio, an interpreter, airport pick-ups and up to five hotel nights.2 Many quotes cover far less, so get these points confirmed in writing:

Time away and getting home

Bookimed suggests about two to three weeks in India.1 Hospital stays at the large chains are often about three to five days, according to one facilitator's FAQ, with the rest spent on physio and a wound review.2 The flight back is long-haul. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons lists blood clots among the known risks after hip replacement and describes the usual prevention: blood thinners, compression and getting moving early.8 Get the Indian surgeon's flight advice in writing, and don't book a return date you can't change.

Aftercare with your GP and the NJR

The NHS publishes guidance for people going abroad for treatment, and it's worth reading before you pay a deposit.9 The practical points are simple. Tell your GP your plan beforehand. Bring back your discharge summary, operation note, X-rays and a written record of the implant. And line up physiotherapy for the week you land, privately if an NHS referral would mean another wait.

The UK's National Joint Registry holds about 4.6 million records, uses them to track how each implant brand performs, and can help trace patients if a particular implant turns out to have a problem.10 Don't assume an operation abroad will reach that registry. Keep your own copy of the implant details and make sure they're on your GP record.

AAOS notes that serious complications such as infection affect fewer than 2% of patients, and that the risk of dislocation is highest in the first few months.8 If either happens after you're home, you'll be relying on NHS services, so know which A&E and which orthopaedic team you'd go to.

When India isn't the right call

If your NHS date is only a few weeks away, if you have heart or clotting problems that make a long flight risky, if you'd be recovering alone, or if you need a complex revision, the UK is usually the better choice. A UK private hip at around £13,000–£14,000 also buys aftercare down the road, which matters more than people expect.

Travel & visa: British passport holders need an e-Medical visa, and up to two companions can get e-Medical Attendant visas. Our India medical visa guide covers the hospital letter, dates and registration rules.13 Read the FCDO's India travel advice too.14

FAQ: hip replacement in India for UK patients

How much is a hip replacement in India in pounds?

Current listings put one total hip at about $5,200–$10,100, roughly £3,950–£7,680 at £0.76 per dollar. Max Healthcare's international page starts at $5,500 (about £4,180). Flights, a companion, hotel nights after discharge and specialist travel insurance are extra.

Is it cheaper than going private in the UK?

Usually on the operation itself: Practice Plus Group charges £13,344 including the consultation. Once you add flights, two to three weeks away, a companion and insurance, the gap narrows, and UK private prices usually include local aftercare.

How long is the NHS wait for a hip replacement?

It varies by trust. PlainNHS's summary of June 2026 figures puts the median orthopaedic wait at a little over 13–14 weeks, with one in ten patients waiting more than about 39–40 weeks. Ask your hospital for your expected date.

Will the NHS look after me if something goes wrong after surgery abroad?

Emergency care is still there, but plan ahead. Read the NHS guidance on going abroad for treatment, tell your GP before you go, and bring home full records and implant details so the local team can help quickly.

How long will I need to stay in India?

About two to three weeks is typical: a few days in hospital, then physiotherapy and a wound check before you're cleared to fly. Keep your return flight flexible.

Can I choose the implant?

You can ask, and you should. Get the brand, model and bearing surface written into the quote, and keep the details for your GP record, because a hip done abroad may not be captured by the National Joint Registry.
