Time in India: about 2–3 weeks, according to Bookimed.1
If you're an American looking at a hip replacement in India, you're probably paying cash, facing a big deductible, or on a plan that won't touch the surgeon you want. This guide sets India's published 2026 prices next to US numbers, says plainly what the package usually leaves out, and helps you work out whether the trip actually saves money for your case.
What a hip package in India usually covers
Indian hospitals and facilitators quote international patients a "package", but the word hides a lot of variation. One facilitator's published package lists medicines, the surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees, the implant, a DVT pump to help prevent clots, physiotherapy, translation, airport transfers and up to five hotel nights.2 Another hospital may quote the operation and ward stay only. Read the inclusions line by line before you compare two numbers.
Usually in the quote
- Surgeon, anaesthesia and operating theatre
- A named implant, if you ask for it in writing
- Standard room for the planned nights
- In-hospital physiotherapy and routine medicines
Often extra
- Pre-op tests repeated in India, and specialist opinions (cardiology, for example)
- Upgraded bearings (ceramic) or robotic assistance
- Extra nights, a private room, or ICU time if something goes wrong
- Flights, a companion's hotel, meals and outpatient physio after discharge
What pushes the price up
- The bearing surface. Bookimed says ceramic-on-ceramic implants add roughly 30–50% to the bill.1 Ask your surgeon whether it makes a clinical difference at your age and activity level before paying for it.
- Robotic assistance. The same listing puts the robotic surcharge at about 20–25%.1 It's a tool, not a guarantee of a better hip.
- City and hospital. One facilitator's city table ranges from about $5,800–$6,300 in Chennai to $8,700–$10,100 in Hyderabad for a total hip.2
- Both hips. Max Healthcare's international page lists bilateral surgery from $8,000.5 Whether doing both at once is safe for you is a surgeon's decision, not a pricing one.
- Revision or resurfacing. Redoing a failed hip is a bigger operation: about $7,500–$8,500 on Bookimed and around $8,250 on one facilitator's table. Resurfacing is listed at about $7,000.1, 2
India vs the US: comparing honestly
US prices are notoriously hard to pin down because the "price" depends on your insurer's negotiated rate. The figures below come from different kinds of sources, so we show who published each one.
| What was measured | Figure | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| US outpatient hip replacement, national average | $25,877 | Health Care Prices national page4 |
| US "typical" cost cited by a medical-travel marketplace | About $60,000 | Bookimed (a marketing source)1 |
| US/Canada average cited by a facilitator | About $40,000 | Medical Tourism Co. (a marketing source)2 |
| US comparison published by an Indian hospital group | About $43,000, against $5,500 at the group itself | Shalby's compare-rates page6 |
| India, one total hip | $5,200–$10,100 | Bookimed and Medical Tourism Co.1, 2 |
The gap is real but narrower than marketing suggests once you add two long-haul tickets, a companion, two to three weeks of accommodation and a contingency fund. If your plan would pay most of a US surgery, India may not save you anything.
Medicare and private insurance: check before you book
Medicare.gov is clear that Medicare usually doesn't pay for health care you get outside the US, apart from a few narrow exceptions, and Part D doesn't cover drugs you buy abroad.7 So if you're on Medicare, a hip done in India is self-pay, and any medicines you bring home were bought out of pocket. Employer and marketplace plans vary: ask in writing whether they cover anything abroad, and, just as important, how they'll handle follow-up visits or a complication once you're back.
How long you'll be in India
Bookimed suggests planning for about 2–3 weeks in India.1 That usually means a few days in hospital (one facilitator's FAQ describes hospital stays of roughly 3–5 days at major chains) and then time nearby for physiotherapy and a wound check before you're cleared to fly.2 Book a flexible return ticket; a stitches check that slips by two days shouldn't cost you a new fare.
The flight home
New York to Delhi nonstop is about 14 hours, according to one facilitator, and most US cities need a connection on top.2 That's a long time to sit still with a new hip. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons notes that blood clots are a known risk after hip replacement and that surgeons use medicines, compression and early movement to reduce it.8 Ask your surgeon for written instructions for the flight: blood thinners, compression stockings, an aisle seat, and how often to get up.
Recovery once you're home
AAOS says you'll need some help at home for several weeks, that falls are a real hazard early on, and that the risk of dislocation is highest in the first few months.8 Serious complications such as joint infection are uncommon, occurring in fewer than 2% of patients, but they happen, and when they do you'll want a local orthopaedic surgeon who already knows your case.8 Arrange that before you fly, not after.
- Ask a US orthopaedic surgeon, before you go, whether they'll see you for follow-up after surgery abroad, and what they'll need from the Indian team.
- Bring home the operative note, discharge summary, X-rays and the implant stickers or a written list of the implant brand, model and sizes.
- Line up outpatient physical therapy for the week you land.
- Make the house safe: remove loose rugs, and get a raised toilet seat and a shower chair.
Choosing a hospital: criteria, not a "top 10"
We don't rank hospitals, and we'd be wary of anyone who sells a "best hospitals in India" list. Use criteria you can check:
- Accreditation you verify yourself. JCI and NABH both publish directories. Look the hospital up on the accreditor's own site rather than trusting a logo on a brochure.9, 10
- Surgeon volume. Ask how many hip replacements the named surgeon does each year, and how many revisions.
- Implant transparency. Get the implant brand, model and bearing surface written into the quote. A hospital that won't name the implant before surgery is telling you something.
- Infection and complication policy. Ask what happens, and who pays, if you need a second operation or extra nights.
- Physio and discharge plan. How many sessions, and what criteria must you meet before they'll clear you to fly?
- An itemised quote. One line per item, in dollars, with exclusions listed.
When staying in the US makes more sense
India is worth a look for self-pay patients with a straightforward hip. It's a poor fit if your insurance would cover most of a US operation, if you have heart, lung or clotting problems that make a long flight risky, if you can't be away for three weeks, or if you have nobody to help you at home afterwards. A complicated revision is also better done near the surgeon who'll look after you for years.
Travel & visa: US citizens need an e-Medical visa, and a companion can apply for an e-Medical Attendant visa. Our India medical visa guide walks through the application, the hospital letter and the dates.11
FAQ: hip replacement in India for US patients
How much does a hip replacement cost in India for Americans?
Current listings put one total hip at about $5,200–$10,100, and Max Healthcare's international page starts at $5,500. Both hips are listed from $8,000. Flights, a companion, extra hotel nights and outpatient physical therapy are on top, so build a full trip budget before you compare.
Will Medicare pay for a hip replacement in India?
Usually not. Medicare.gov says Medicare generally doesn't cover care outside the US except in a few narrow situations, and Part D doesn't cover drugs bought abroad. Plan on paying for the surgery yourself and check how your coverage handles follow-up visits at home.
How long should I stay in India after hip surgery?
Plan for about two to three weeks. Hospital stays are often around three to five days, followed by physiotherapy and a wound check nearby before your surgeon clears you for the long flight home. Book a ticket you can change.
Is it safe to fly home after a hip replacement?
Many patients do, but blood clots are a known risk after hip surgery and a US-bound flight is long. Ask your surgeon for written flight instructions covering blood thinners, compression stockings and moving around, and don't fly before they've cleared you.
Which implant will I get?
Whichever one you agree in writing. Ask for the brand, model and bearing surface in the quote, and bring home the implant stickers or a written list so your US surgeon knows exactly what's in your hip.
Can I have both hips done in one trip?
Some hospitals offer it: Max Healthcare lists bilateral surgery from $8,000. Whether it's safe depends on your health and imaging, and recovery is harder. If your surgeon advises staging the hips, price two trips.
