Medical treatment in India for US patients
Start with the treatment and the complete trip
Include flights, accommodation, any return visit and follow-up at home in your USD budget. Choose the guide below for published sources and the questions to include in a written estimate.
Most Americans who land here are paying cash, or have a deductible high enough that it feels the same. These guides show what India actually charges in 2026, in dollars, and where the trip math works or doesn't. Every figure comes from a published source you can check.

Before you plan from the US
- Check your own coverage first. Dental plans often cap annual benefits at $1,500–$2,000, which barely touches an implant,1 but some medical plans, employer fertility benefits or state IVF rules can beat any overseas price. Read your plan's wording before you compare.
- Price the whole trip. Flights from the US to Delhi or Mumbai are long-haul, usually with one connection. A dental case often needs a second visit for final teeth; knee or hip surgery means 2–3 weeks in India; IVF may mean a return trip for a frozen transfer.
- Mexico is a real competitor. For one or two implants, or an IVF plan needing several transfers, a short flight south can beat India once travel is counted. Our guides say so when it applies.
- Taxes, carefully. IRS Publication 502 lets you count medical and dental costs only above 7.5% of adjusted gross income, and only if you itemise. Lodging rules are narrow. Ask a tax professional before you count on it.13
Visa and documents
US citizens need a visa for India. For treatment, the government's e-Visa portal offers an e-Medical visa, and a family member can apply for an e-Medical Attendant visa. Apply at least four days before you fly, and bring the hospital's letter and your records.14 Our India medical visa guide walks through each step.
Other guides
Not American? The same guides exist in pounds for UK patients, in Canadian dollars for patients in Canada, and in dirhams for UAE residents. Before you ask for a quote, read how we research prices.
Want a real number for your case? Ask for a written, itemised quote. We won't push you to book.
