Plan the full cost from Canada
Compare the complete trip in Canadian dollars and make a plan for follow-up after you return to Canada.
Ask for separate prices for the cycle, medicines, tests, any ICSI, freezing, storage and embryo transfer. Published ranges are research references; the treating provider must confirm the current price and your plan.

For Canadians, the cost of IVF depends heavily on where you live. Ontario funds one cycle for eligible residents; elsewhere you may be paying close to the full private price. This guide shows India's published 2026 IVF prices in Canadian dollars next to real Canadian clinic price lists, explains a tax detail Ontario patients often miss, and sets out the Indian laws that decide what's possible for a foreign patient.
What public funding covers, using Ontario as the example
Ontario's Fertility Program pays participating clinics to treat eligible residents with a valid health card. For IVF you must be under 43, and coverage is one treatment cycle per patient, including the one-at-a-time transfer of all viable embryos from that cycle. Sex, gender, sexual orientation and family status don't affect eligibility.5
Funded doesn't mean free. The province lists what isn't covered: fertility drugs (it estimates about $5,000 per IVF cycle), genetic testing, and storage of eggs, sperm or embryos. Clinics also manage their own wait lists for funded cycles.5 Other provinces run different programs, or none, so check with your provincial health ministry before comparing anything with India.

India's published prices in Canadian dollars
Most Indian clinics quote international patients in US dollars. At C$1.41 per US dollar, the ECB reference rate for 24 September 20267:
- IVF cycle: $2,500–$4,500 excluding drugs on one facilitator's page and $3,000–$5,000 on another, about C$3,520–C$7,050.1, 2
- Medications: roughly $350–$1,500, about C$490–C$2,120.1, 2
- Frozen embryo transfer: $300–$900, about C$420–C$1,270.1
- Genetic testing, where the law allows it: $600–$2,500+, about C$850–C$3,520.1
- Indian domestic pricing, for context: Cloudnine's blog quotes ₹1.5–2.5 lakh for standard IVF in the big cities and Dr Hrishikesh Pai's 2026 article ₹1–3 lakh. Foreign patients shouldn't expect those rates.8, 9
The Ontario tax credit doesn't travel
Ontario's Fertility Treatment Tax Credit refunds 25% of eligible fertility expenses, on up to $20,000 a year, for a maximum credit of $5,000. But the expenses must be for goods and services provided entirely in Canada, and travel only counts if it's within Canada.10 Clinic fees, drugs and flights for treatment in India don't qualify. If you're an Ontario resident comparing a C$20,000 private cycle at home with India, remember that the home cycle could come with up to C$5,000 back.
Ask a tax professional about any federal medical expense rules that may apply to you. We haven't assessed them for treatment abroad.
Is India worth the distance from Canada?
Plan on roughly a month in India for a fresh cycle; The Medical Travel Company says three to four weeks.2 From most Canadian cities that's a long-haul trip with a connection, and a frozen transfer later usually means going back. Compare that with Mexico: the same directory lists a basic Mexican cycle at about US$4,000–$6,500, with travel budgets of roughly US$900–$2,700 from the US.6 For many Canadians, especially in the west, Mexico or a funded cycle at home may win once the flights are counted.
India tends to make sense when you're paying privately, have a straightforward protocol, can take a month away, and either plan to transfer a fresh embryo or accept a second trip.
India's IVF rules for foreign patients
India does not offer surrogacy to foreign nationals. This guide covers IVF with your own gametes, or donor gametes where Indian law permits.
Our summary of the two 2021 Acts, in plain language. It isn't legal advice.
- Registration. Clinics and gamete banks must be registered under the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021. The national ART and Surrogacy portal publishes the registry, rules and notifications.11, 12
- Ages. The Act lets clinics treat women above 21 and below 50, and men above 21 and below 55.11
- Eligibility. The law defines patients as an infertile married couple or a woman above 21. Nationality isn't separately tested in the Act, but clinics apply the rules, so ask for written confirmation that they can treat you, especially if you're unmarried, in a same-sex relationship, or using a donor.11
- Donors. Donor eggs and sperm come only through registered banks; each egg donor donates once in her life, with a cap of seven eggs retrieved; one donor's gametes can't go to more than one couple. You must also buy 12 months of insurance for any egg donor.11
- Embryo testing and sex selection. Pre-implantation genetic testing is restricted to screening for known heritable or genetic diseases, and sex selection is prohibited.11 If you'd routinely use PGT-A at a Canadian clinic, ask how an Indian clinic applies this rule before you pay.
- Shipping embryos to Canada. The Act bans transferring gametes and embryos, with an exception for your own, for personal use, with permission from the National Board. The portal runs that permission process.11, 12
- Surrogacy. The Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021 prohibits commercial surrogacy and limits altruistic surrogacy to Indian couples and certain Indian women.13
How to judge a clinic
- Check its registration on the national ART registry yourself.12
- Request outcome data the way Canadian clinics tend to discuss it: live births per retrieval in your age group, own-egg and donor-egg cycles reported apart.
- Insist on a costed plan in writing, with separate lines for medication, ICSI, embryo freezing, annual storage and each future transfer.
- Check hospital back-up and any JCI or NABH accreditation on the accreditors' own sites.14, 15
- Walk away from guaranteed-pregnancy offers. A 2025 BMJ feature described malpractice problems in India's IVF sector.16

Before you leave, and after you get back
Global Affairs Canada's India page includes a medical tourism warning; read it and plan follow-up care in Canada before you travel.17 Ask the Indian clinic for complete records, including embryo grading, drugs used and transfer notes, so your Canadian doctor or clinic can pick up the thread, whether that's pregnancy care or a future cycle.
Travel & visa: Canadian citizens need an e-Medical visa, and a partner can apply for an e-Medical Attendant visa. The e-Visa portal also carries a separate advisory for Canadian nationals. Our India medical visa guide covers the details.18
FAQ: IVF in India for Canadian patients
How much does IVF cost in India in Canadian dollars?
Medical-travel facilitators list roughly US$2,500–$5,000 per cycle, or C$3,520–C$7,050 at C$1.41. Medication typically adds C$490–C$2,120 and a frozen transfer C$420–C$1,270. You'd also pay for long-haul flights and around a month of accommodation.
How does that compare with a private cycle in Canada?
Pollin Fertility in Toronto starts at C$14,600 plus C$6,000–C$8,000+ in medications, and Generation Fertility lists C$13,450 before drugs. India's clinic fees are much lower, but add long-haul travel and any return trip for a frozen transfer.
Does Ontario pay for IVF?
Ontario funds one IVF cycle for eligible residents under 43 with a valid health card, including transfers of all viable embryos from that cycle. Drugs, which the province puts at about $5,000 per cycle, genetic testing and storage aren't covered.
Can I claim the Ontario fertility tax credit for IVF in India?
No. Ontario's Fertility Treatment Tax Credit only applies to goods and services provided entirely in Canada, and travel only counts within Canada. It refunds 25% of eligible expenses up to a $5,000 credit a year, which can narrow the gap with India.
Is IVF legal in India for Canadians?
It is, provided the clinic is registered under the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021, which sets age limits of 21 to 50 for women and 21 to 55 for men. Ask the clinic to put your eligibility in writing before paying. Foreign nationals can't use surrogacy in India.
Can I ship embryos from India to Canada?
Only with permission. India's ART Act allows transfer of your own embryos for personal use with the National Board's approval, through a process on the national portal. Ask the clinic about it before starting.
